The Wellspring is an infinite source of magic located in Fillory. It acts as the most common source of magic throughout the universe.

History[]

The details of the wellspring's creation are unknown, but it was presumably created by the Old Gods, as they are the ones who take action to revoke its access under special circumstances. It resides on the world of Fillory and any interference with its function can have consequences for the flow of magic throughout the universe. However, the fact that magic continued to function after the destruction of Fillory suggests that it may have simply been the access point for the wellspring and not the entirety of the wellspring itself. When the old gods rescinded the universe's access to the wellspring after the murder of Ember, the god Hades said that magic was a "carrot" that the old gods used to keep humans in line and that it will always return, though it may take several millennia. Implying that the wellspring may ultimately be a method of control to keep humans from engaging in murderous acts against gods.

Tainted by Ember[]

In order to prevent Martin Chatwin from using the Wellspring to heal himself, Ember contaminates the wellspring in order to make its power essentially useless. This causes magical brownouts, where magic would temporarily fizz out for a short period of time.
